Father Escalante
Essay
Good Example
In
the 1700s, many white settlers in the Americas referred to all of the Native
Americans, or Indians, as savages. But what made them savages? The truth behind
these Native Americans and their role as savages was uncovered by one man. His
name is Father Escalanate. Father Escalante was a Spanish Priest who traveled
through the Great Basin Region of Utah looking to convert the Natives living
there to Christianity. His expedition greatly influenced the age of exploration
as well as the interactions between Whites and Natives.
The
kick start to the exploration frenzy took place in the 15th century. With the
high amounts of trading that took place between Europe and the Indies (today
know as Asia), explorers set out in great waves in order to look for better routes
to get places. During this time, technology was not how it is today. People
could not rely on satellite images or Google maps to help them know how to get
places. Instead, these men were charting their own way and discovering the
world. This is exactly what Father Escalante and his expedition group was doing
in the Great Basin. They were charting their own way and discovering the area.
This increased the world's knowledge of the Utah region. One way that we can
see this increase of knowledge is with the map that was produced from this
expedition. Father Escalante traveled with a man by the name of Miera who was a
skilled map maker. Throughout their journey, Miera took notes and drew pictures
that were then converted into a map that could be used by others when
journeying in this newly charted area. Throughout this journey, Father
Escalante also kept a journal. His journal became a great tool for people to
read about his travels and learn more about the area. Therefore, it is clear
that Father Escalante's expedition opened the way for more explorers and
travelers to come to Utah.
As
Father Escalante and his group moved throughout Utah, they soon became lost.
They soon began to run out of water and were in danger. Fortunately for the
group, a Ute Indian soon found the men and agreed to be their guide. Father
Escalante recorded in his journal on August 30th that they presented the Indian
with various goods such as a knife, glass beads, and a cloak in exchange for
him to act as their guide. Father Escalante named his guide Silvestre. Which is
interesting since that is also Father Escalante's first name. Hopefully that
was not too confusing for the group to have two men with the same name.
Silvestre became a vital asset for the group. Escalante recorded in his journal
on September 23 a story about how the group came upon an Indian village. As
soon as they approached, the Indian warriors came out with weapons to fight.
Silvestre the guide immediately stepped forward and began talking with the
warriors. Soon the weapons lowered and the two groups were able to interact
with each other peacefully. As this story demonstrates, Escalante's journal was
also an important tool to tell the world of the relationships that could exist
between Whites and Natives.
It
is clear through these examples, especially with Escalante's journal and
Miera's map, that Father Escalante's expedition was critical to the age of
exploration and the future relationships between Whites and Natives. This
expedition demonstrated that Indians were not savages. Instead, Whites seemed
to have been suffering for a case of ethnocentricity, or in the belief of their
own ethnicity's superiority. But with Escalante's expedition, the White
settlers in the U.S. were able to begin to understand Native Americans and see
the value to their lifestyle.

Essay
Bad Example
Father
Escalante was a Spanish priest who went on a trip through Utah in 1776. On his
trip he found out lots of things. He was the first person who was not an Indian
to travel through the Great Basin Region of Utah.
It
wasn't long through their journey, that the expedition became lost. The group
then met up with a guy by the name of Silvestre who was a Ute Indian and he
became their guide. Silvestre showed the group around Utah and Escalante's
friend Miera who was a mapmaker was able to make a map of the area.
Father
Escalante kept a journal with him and wrote in it while he traveled through the
Great Basin. This journal helped tell us about the group's travels as well as
their encounters with Native Americans.
Father
Escalante and his group had a great time traveling throughout Utah and making
friends with the Natives who they were trying to convert to Christianity.

Intro Example
America
is the land of the free, the country where all can enjoy equality and liberty.
From the beginning foundations of this country, immigrants to the U.S. believe
they were coming to a world full of opportunities and that if they just work
hard enough, they can have whatever kind of life they desire. The American
Dream. However, this country was not a dream for many of the first settlers of
America. African Slaves were brought over to work fields, mines, and other
kinds of labor intensive jobs. This act of slavery was justified primarily by
the fact that Africans, dark-skinned people, were seen as inferior and
therefore should be ruled. With the abolishment of slavery following the Civil
War and the Civil Rights Movement, this kind of inferior premise thinking has
dissolved. Unfortunately, this is not the case. On February 26, 2012, Trayvon
Martin, a 17 year old boy, was shot due to the stereotype of his black race.
Therefore, even a hundred and fifty years after Abraham Lincoln gave his
Gettysburg Address and fifty years after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I
Have a Dream speech, America is still full of racial prejudices that cause
race to be a factor that influences people in their everyday lives and
decisions.
